Verlaine May Powless' Eulogy
Delivered by Melissa Garcia on Thursday, July 31, 2008.

We are all gathered here today to celebrate the life of Verlaine May Powless.

To me, she was known as May. I’ve known May since the day she was born on March 4th, 1989. My parents told me stories of how she couldn’t wait to come into this world. When she was born, she came out just like ‘superman’ with one arm out. I remember how excited I was to see her for the first time. Since, I am the only child I was so ecstatic to finally have someone to play with. May was my 2nd cousin but she was my sister too. We had a bond like no other. We were inseparable. At times, we would even dress the same. Everything I did, she did.

As you all know, May had the biggest heart. She was the sweetest, most caring and strongest person I have ever known. She had such a contagious smile and laugh. There was nothing May could do wrong ‘cause as soon as she smiled she just melted your heart. Everyone who met her for the first time fell in love with her. She loved to dance and had a beautiful voice. She gave the best hugs and massages too.

Although she was suddenly taken from us, she truly lived a meaningful and complete life. She experienced so much. She was a wonderful big sister, an incredible daughter, loyal friend, and loving girlfriend and overall a remarkable person that truly made this world a better place. Lastly, she was able to experience true love. Love from her soul mate, Chris. They completed each other. Every time, Justin and I came to Vegas we always arranged time to spend with these two. Thank you Chris for showing her what love is and what life is about. And trust me, she was crazy about you. She loved you so much.

The last time I saw her was in April. We went to this Chinese restaurant that Chris and she had recommended. She forewarned me, however, that the service was bad but that the food was just too ‘damn good’. We laughed so much that night. When we dropped them off, May got down from the car and we told each other how much we loved each other as we always do and she gave me the longest and warmest hug that I will never forget.

My worst fear came true on July 25, 2008 when I lost a part of me. I am saddened that she will not be here to spend the holidays with us or be there at my wedding. Never had I imagined that I would be standing in front of you all today. I know that she is looking down on us and that she is in a better place and that we will see each other again soon.

For Good- Wicked Musical

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend
Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good.

May, I just want to tell you how very proud I am of you and all your accomplishments. I love you with every beat of my heart and can not wait for your return. You are my sister forever. I can’t express enough how much you mean to me. Remember that I am always and forever thinking of you and the memories that we share. I will always keep you alive in my heart. I am here for you forever. I will always remember our wonderful times together. The silly things we used to do and our great conversations. I will remember your smile, your laugh, your hands, your feet and your scent. I will never forget you. Our memories will live on forever. I miss you so much and I can’t wait to hold you and see your beautiful face again soon. I will always be your Ate and you will always be my baby. I love you!!

In Loving Memory of Verlaine May Powless
Speech delivered by Justin Griffith on Thursday, July 31, 2008.

I'd like to begin by acknowledging a few people who have been instrumental in making this ceremony such a beautiful occasion. First her family, especially Melchor, Peggy, Ashley and Chris, all of which have every last ounce of my condolences for your profound loss, in addition to the entirety of my respect for all your bravery. To all of her friends who no doubt join all of us in the extreme difficulty of losing May. Also to the acquaintances and complete strangers who have shown an incredible amount of support. This is perhaps the best testament to the character found in Verlaine...the effect she had on every one she came into contact with, regardless of how brief the contact may have been. For my part, I think I'm in good company when I say my contact with her was all TOO brief.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm Melissa's Boyfriend. my name is Justin McCawley Griffith. The middle name, McCawley, was given to me in remembrance of my great grandfather McCawley. The name itself is Irish, and though there's a wide vein of Irish blood in my family lineage, bearing the name McCawley has always made me feel especially close to that heritage. As such, I hope you'll indulge me in reciting an Irish blessing that was delivered as part of a Eulogy in 1910 by Henry Scott Holland and is simply called "An Irish Funeral Prayer".

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Everything remains as it was.
The old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no sorrow in your tone.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting, when we meet again.

It's a commonly held belief in the Irish tradition that death is not the end, but merely a temporary parting of way. That our loved ones are not gone they are simply out of our reach...temporarily. And though they may be out of reach they are not always out of touch. It's as if the past couple of days have yielded signs of both Verlaine's benevolence... and her mischief.

One such experience happened the day after the accident. When Melissa and I arrived in Vegas we had two primary concerns...Verlaine's mom, Peggy... and her boyfriend, and dare I say soulmate, Chris. As the day came to a close we joined both of them back at Verlaine and Chris' apartment. In looking through Chris and May's (we'll call it a storage room =), we came across a poem placed on the wall. No one will ever really know what if any significance this poem had for Verlaine, but reading the poem revealed an remarkable degree of coincidence. It was her mom's request that the poem be recited today. It is the very same poem printed in the Memorial Folder. It's called "I'm Free!"

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I'm following paths God made for me.
I took His hand, I heard Him call.
Then turned and bid farewell to all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to sing, to play.
Task left undone must stay that way.
I found my peace at close of day.

And if my parting left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened, deep with sorrow.
I wish you sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full. I've savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief.
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me.
God wants me now; He set me free.

I'll close with my thanks again to everyone for coming today and thank you to those who've made it to the viewings, memorials, and gatherings held in honor of Verlaine. Please remember her, her family, her friends and the love of her life in your thoughts and prayers, but also in your actions. Thank You.

Nandito Ako by Lea Salonga

with English translation
(Sung by Melissa Garcia at Verlaine's funeral service on Thursday, July 31, 2008.)

Mayroon akong nais malaman
There's something I want to know
Maaari bang magtanong
May I ask a question?
Alam mo bang matagal na kitang iniibig
Did you know that I've been loving you a long time?
Matagal na 'kong naghihintay
I've been waiting for a long time

Ngunit mayroon ka nang ibang minamahal
Although you love someone else
Kung kaya't ako'y di mo pinapansin
Which is why you don't notice me
Ngunit ganun pa man nais kong malaman mo
And yet I want you to know
Ang puso kong ito'y para lang sa iyo
This heart of mine is only for you

Nandito ako umiibig sa iyo
I'm here, loving you
Kahit na nagdurugo ang puso
Though my heart is bleeding
Kung sakaling iwanan ka niya
If she should ever leave you
Huwag kang mag-alala
Don't worry
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Someone loves you
Nandito ako
I'm here

Kung ako ay iyong iibigin
If you were to love me
Di kailangan ang mangamba
No need to worry
Pagka't ako ay para mong alipin
Because I'm your slave
Sa iyo lang wala nang iba
Only for you, no one else

Ngunit mayroon ka nang ibang minamahal
Although you love someone else
Kung kaya't ako'y di mo pinapansin
Which is why you don't notice me
Ngunit ganun pa man nais kong malaman mo
And yet I want you to know
Ang puso kong ito'y para lang sa iyo
This heart of mine, is only for you

Nandito ako umiibig sa iyo
I'm here, loving you
Kahit na nagdurugo ang puso
Though my heart is bleeding
Kung sakaling iwanan ka niya
If she should ever leave you
Huwag kang mag-alala
Don't worry
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Someone loves you
Nandito ako
I'm here

Nandito ako umiibig sa iyo
I'm here, loving you
Kahit na nagdurugo ang puso
Though my heart is bleeding
Kung sakaling iwanan ka niya
If she should ever leave you
Huwag kang mag-alala
Don't worry
May nagmamahal sa iyo
Someone loves you
Nandito ako
I'm here

Nandito ako...

When You See A Butterfly
My soul is released in Heaven
My spirit is in the wind,
I've arrived inside God's kingdom
in Heaven here with Him.

Inside this place of beauty
Enchantment always near,
Far past imagination
this land that has no fear.

Think of me when butterflies
are flying everywhere
I'm singing, dancing, laughing
Free from earth's despair.

The other side of tomorrow
Within God's time you'll see,
I know He'll bring you safely home
then forever we will be.

Keep a song inside your heart
And know that I am free,
Do not weep in sorrow
When you remember me.

Stop light coming to dangerous intersection

One fatality, eight accidents prompt county to speed up installation of traffic signal

BRETT MCAFEE

County officials plan to install a stop light at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Wigwam Avenue in response to concerns about safety. A pedestrian was killed at the intersection last summer.

By Ashley Livingston
Thu, Jan 22, 2009 (11:11 a.m.)

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for residents of the area near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Wigwam Avenue who have expressed concerns about the safety of the pedestrian crossing there.

Clark County Public Works spokesman Bobby Shelton said everything is on track for the early May activation of a traffic signal at the intersection while County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said he is looking for ways to have the signal installed even sooner.

"If we can get it done even 30 days earlier, we might save a life," Sisolak said.

Sisolak said he aims to expedite the process of getting the project advertised to contractors and once a contractor is selected, expedite the commission's approval of the contract.

If he can get it done three to four weeks earlier than planned, he said he'll be happy.

"It's a number one priority," he said

For years, residents of the area have worried about their safety as, with vehicles flying by at the posted limit of 50 mph or faster, they tried to cross the five lanes of traffic separating residential developments on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard South from the stores and library on the east side.

Former state Sen. Joe Heck said he recalled being contacted by constituents worried about the crossing in 2005.

In response to concerns, he said he requested a traffic study from the Nevada Department of Transportation, the entity that had purview over that section of road prior to it being relinquished to Clark County sometime between 2006 and 2007.

Heck said when a traffic study concluded that the intersection did not warrant a light, he continued to work with NDOT officials to try and get a four-way stop installed, but then when the road became the county's, the entire process had to start over.

The installation of the signal was then included by the county in a roadway construction project to widen Las Vegas Boulevard South between Sunset Road and Silverado Ranch Boulevard that is scheduled to be completed in late 2009.

During the summer of 2008, while the intersection still remained unchanged, tensions among concerned residents who wanted action sooner came to a head.

On July 25, 19-year-old Verlaine May Powless was struck by a vehicle and killed as she traversed the crosswalk to get to the bus stop after her shift at Cash Plus.

Officer Barbara Morgan with Las Vegas Metro Police said during 2008 there were eight accidents at that intersection and one fatality.

The death of Powless sparked a petition for a signal that was signed by hundreds as well as a protest during Labor Day weekend in which about 50 residents disrupted traffic for miles by crossing Las Vegas Boulevard South repeatedly without pause. It was after the protest that county officials reported that the installation of the traffic signal would be removed from the Las Vegas Boulevard widening project and be completed at an earlier date.

Protest organizer and former coworker of Powless, Guy Smith, said he attributes the expedition of the signal to the residents' activism coupled with the threat of future protests.

Shelton said the public response to the death of Powless was not what prompted the county to expedite the signal.

"We routinely do that with various traffic signals," he said. "We try to get them built as quickly as possible."

In addition to the installation of the signal, Shelton said the speed limit on Las Vegas Boulevard will change sometime this year.

As part of the Las Vegas Boulevard South widening project, he said the speed limit will be reduced from 50 mph to 45 mph.

Also part of the project, a traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Serene Avenue, Shelton said.

Sisolak said there are probably other intersections along Las Vegas Boulevard that need attention, but for now his focus is on the intersection at Wigwam Avenue.

"Quite frankly, I don't want to give them any reason to delay this one," he said.
Metro takes action to make intersection safer

Updated: Jan 8, 2009 11:49 PM

A local woman is fighting to get a traffic light put up at the intersection of Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard where her daughter was killed in the crosswalk last summer.

No light is up yet but because of a story Action News aired, Metro says they're trying to make the intersection safer now.

Peggy Tejido hopes her 19 - year - old daughter's death will be the last at the intersection of Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard.

It was last July when an SUV struck and killed Verlaine Powless in a crosswalk.

The county says a traffic light will be up this summer but until then expect to see the lights of Metro.

Metro wants drivers to know they must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk where cars cruise at freeway speeds.

"This intersection is probably more dangerous than other just because there's more than fifty mile per hour speeds out here on Las Vegas Boulevard," said Officer Scott Lang.

Metro staked out the intersection for four hours Thursday afternoon.

"We started at noon and we've probably pulled over six cars so far," said Officer Lang.

Later, Action News learned Metro issued 93 tickets total Thursday at Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Metro says they hope their presence will get drivers to give pedestrians the right of way.

Peggy just wants others to be safe and avoid the heartache that comes with losing a loved one.

"It's not going to bring my daughter back but there's still a lot of people that cross the street cross this street," said Peggy.

Metro say if there is a pedestrian in the crosswalk, you must stop until he or she gets to the center median then you can continue.

Do you know of a dangerous intersection where changes need to be made?

Accident victim's family fights for traffic light

Updated: Jan 7, 2009 11:57 PM

All drivers should know pedestrians have the right of way but we see all over the Valley, crosswalks with no stop lights to go along with them.

After the death of a teen in a crosswalk this summer, locals are now trying to hurry getting a light at Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard.

But government processes don't hurry for anyone.

Cars race by at 50 plus miles per hour on Las Vegas Boulevard 19:10:01 signs and wigwam and pedestrians race across the street

They're not jaywalkers, they're walking inside the crosswalk.

But safety lights and white lines on the street don't mean cars will stop.

They didn't stop for Peggy Tejido's 19 -year - old daughter.

Verlaine was hit by an SUV and killed while walking in this crosswalk last July.

Metro says there have been 24 other accidents at the intersection over the last two years.

Now Peggy is doing everything she can to make the intersection safer.

She's organized protests and collected over 400 signatures on an online petition to put up a traffic light.

"It's not going to bring my daughter back but there's still a lot of people that cross the street cross this street," said Peggy.

Action News wanted to know why the delay?

Clark County's Department of Public Works says the light was already being planned before the deadly accident, but now it will go up sooner.

Fast-tracked doesn't mean fast, the light won't actually be built until June, almost a year after the accident.

Peggy isn't giving up to try and get a light up as soon as possible.

"It's ridiculous they already have the poles up there already. All they have to do is put the light I don't want that to happen to you know someone else's kid," said Peggy.

The Department of Public Works says there are about 50y similar projects in the county in the works for traffic lights to go up at various intersections.

Because of our story, Metro traffic will be out enforcing the speed limit and traffic violations at the Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard intersection.

What do you think about the intersection of Wigwam and Las Vegas Boulevard?

Do you know of another dangerous intersection in the city where changes were made?

Leave a comment below.

Efforts to protect peds still fall short of needs

Thu, Sep 11, 2008 (midnight)

Dozens of men, women and children are run over by cars and killed each year in Southern Nevada. And hundreds more are injured.

It's a problem that seems to defy solution: Last year, the death toll in Clark County was 37 — another 34 had been struck and killed this year as of Aug. 31.

Local traffic safety advocates and police deserve some credit for undertaking periodic safety campaigns aimed at reducing the toll of death and injury.

As part of a campaign announced Sept. 5 by UNLV's Safe Community Partnership, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and the group Joining Forces, police were given funding to temporarily place extra resources into ticketing violators of pedestrian-related laws; and ads were launched urging pedestrians and motorists to watch out for each other.

Any effort to save lives is laudable. But this effort falls woefully short of what's needed to resolve the problem.

Metro, for instance, didn't have enough money to conduct a valleywide campaign, so it involved just two of its seven area commands in this month's enforcement campaign. Because of the funding issue, pedestrians and motorists in places like Silverado, the West Valley, Summerlin and Northwest Las Vegas received no extra attention.

It's doubtful the ad campaign, either, will do much to reduce the death and injury count.

It urges motorists and pedestrians to pay more attention to each other. That strikes us as being a no-brainer, and a message that dodges the real issues.

The real issues in Las Vegas are these:

* Police agencies either don't have enough money to properly enforce pedestrian safety laws or need to rethink their priorities so that pedestrian safety moves up on the to-do list.
* • The design of the valley's wide, high-speed roads — think Las Vegas and Rainbow boulevards and Boulder Highway — and the lack of traffic signals and signal-protected crosswalks on those roads make them particularly dangerous for pedestrians.

What's needed is a commitment by the state and local governments to redesign our most dangerous roads and intersections, install signal-protected crosswalks wherever needed and lower the speed limit where needed. Police should aggressively enforce these lower speed limits.

The July 25 death of Verlaine May Powless illustrates why local policy makers need to get more serious about this problem. The 19-year-old was struck in the poorly marked, poorly lit intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard at Wigwam Parkway. Her death has prompted an outcry among nearby residents who say a stoplight is needed there to better protect the large number of pedestrians who use the intersection.

Clark County is now speeding up plans for a stoplight and is proposing a lower speed limit there.

That's great — but why wait for the next tragedy before taking such measures at every similar dangerous intersection lacking a stoplight in the valley?
